If you only knew...

This one has misled thousands of chiropractors. Repeated at just about every chiropractic gathering at one time or another, this chiroism overlooks the chasm between knowing and doing. In the same way most dental patients know they should regularly floss, but don't, most chiropractic patients know they would benefit from regular, nonsymptomatic chiropractic checkups, but don't.

The truth is, patients do what they do because they believe what they believe.
We all act in ways to remain congruent with what we believe. Thus, doing is a symptom of what you believe. If patients discontinue their care as soon as they feel better, it's because of what they believe, not because of what they know.

If you have any hope of attracting cash-paying families interested in wellness care, you're actually in the belief changing business, not the spine-straightening-curve-restoration-pain-relief business.

The many benefits of Accupuncture

Acupuncture can be used to treat a host of conditions, from a general sense of feeling unwell to chemotherapy-related nausea. While research has specified its effectiveness for a laundry list of ailments, there are even more that are yet to be uncovered.  Some people even schedule a few acupuncture treatments per year as a “tune-up” to cultivate balance and ward off illness. As a form of preventative medicine, acupuncture is highly effective. It’s also effective for treating or alleviating the symptoms associated with acute and chronic conditions such as:
  • Pain and Musculoskeletal Disorders: Migraines and headaches, injuries, tendonitis, neck pain, bursitis, back pain, sciatica, carpal tunnel, tennis elbow, fibromyalgia, post-surgical pain, post-dental pain, inflammation and swelling, shingles, muscle tension and dysfunction, arthritis, including osteoarthritis, etc.
  • Neurological Issues: Stroke-related conditions, Bell’s Palsy, movement disorders, trigeminal neuralgia, peripheral neuropathy, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, cerebral palsy, paralysis, etc.
  • Upper-Respiratory Conditions: Asthma, cold, flu, sore throat, sinusitis, allergies, bronchitis, laryngitis, emphysema, etc.
  • Gastrointestinal Issues: Irritable bowel syndrome, diarrhea, constipation, colitis, acid reflux, gastritis, food allergies, including lactose intolerance, peptic ulcers, digestive tract bleeding, bacterial infections, hiatus hernia syndrome, etc.
  • Urinary Difficulties: Urinary incontinence, neurogenic bladder, frequent urination, urinary tract infections, cystitis, painful urination, incomplete urination, difficult urination, chronic prostatitis, etc.
  • Reproductive Disorders: Irregular menstrual cycles, infertility in men and women, menstrual cramps and PMS symptoms, heavy periods, menopausal symptoms, etc.
  • Immunity: Chronic infections, autoimmune disorders, diabetes, thyroid disease, chronic fatigue syndrome, supportive treatment for those with cancer and AIDS, etc.
  • Addiction: Alcohol, prescription medications, illegal drugs, nicotine, pornography, sex, food, etc.
  • Eye and Ear Problems: Earaches, nerve deafness, tinnitus, Meniere’s disease, dizziness, red and itchy eyes, vertigo, cataracts, infections, impaired vision, etc.
  • Emotional and Psychological Conditions: Depression, bipolar, anxiety, phobias, postpartum depression, insomnia, schizophrenia, restlessness, post-traumatic stress disorder, etc.
  • Miscellaneous: Low energy, fatigue, weight loss, restoring balance, general unease, cosmetic issues, discomfort related to pregnancy, bloating, immunity boost, stress, enhanced sports performance, skin problems, such as acne, rosacea, eczema, psoriasis, and heat rash, etc.

Trap Pain...No More

RICE Treatment

According to MayoClinic. com, you can care for minor trapezius strain at home using the RICE treatment. Rest from the activity that caused the strain, and apply an ice pack for 15 minutes every few hours. You can also reduce discomfort by applying an elastic bandage. Neck Solutions adds that you should elevate the muscle above your heart -- meaning that you should avoid lying flat -- and apply heat with a hot bath or heating pad after the initial swelling has subsided. Over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications and topical creams can be employed for pain, if you have no conditions that preclude their use.

Massage for Trapezius Strain

Neck Solutions notes that you can use massage to reduce pain and stiffness in your trapezius muscle. The website advises using one or two fingers to apply a firm, steady pressure for at least 60 seconds. Then massage the area in circles for another minute or two. For hard-to-reach areas, you can use a back massager.

Herbal Remedies

Herbalists often recommend ginger to reduce inflammation and swelling. Ginger's volatile oils contain the anti-inflammatory agents beta-bisabolene and zingiberine. Drugs.com, which provides medically-reviewed information to consumers, reports that most studies on ginger show an ability to reduce pain greater than placebo but less than that of traditional anti-inflammatory drugs. The usual dosage is 250 mg to 1 g of root powder taken three to four times per day. Consult your doctor before using ginger, and don't take it if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Bromelain, an enzyme extracted from pineapple, contains proteolytic enzymes that may reduce inflammation. In a review conducted by S. Brien and colleagues and published in the December, 2004 issue of "Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine," the author concluded that bromelain has anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties, but said more study was needed to evaluate its usefulness and proper dosage in treating inflammatory conditions. Drugs.com notes that the usual dosage is 40 mg three or four times a day. Ask your doctor before using bromelain. If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, don't take bromelain.

Skin Rejuvenation Tips

As we age and are exposed to free radicals from the sun, environmental toxins and the aging process, our smooth, soft, vibrant and tight youthful appearance often evolves into fine lines, wrinkles, hyper-pigmentation spots, sun spots and often enlarged pores with a rough and dry skin texture. And along with these visible tell tale signs of aging, is often a loss of self confidence that may profoundly affect your social and professional interactions and relationships.

If you are looking for a solution, it is easy to be confused by all the anti aging skin care products and claims for breakthrough anti aging treatments. These three tips will help you understand your options for skin rejuvenation and a total facial renewal without invasive procedures or using products that can actually cause more damage in the long term.

Aesthetic Beauty Tip #1:

Medical grade skin care products (Medicated cosmetics also called cosmeceuticals) are your safest and most effective choice. Many products are not carefully regulated by the FDA and include ingredients that can actually harm your skin. Choose only skin care products made with all natural ingredients that are selected for your specific skin type and needs. This should be determined by a qualified aesthetic practitioner after a careful skin evaluation.

Aesthetic Beauty Tip #2:

Non invasive laser skin care treatments can be a remarkable anti aging solution for tightening and rejuvenating the skin. The newest version of the Dual Fraxel laser, the Q switched ND:YAG laser such as Revelite, and the newly improved Thermage technology are among the best skin rejuvinantion lasers available today. This safe, comfortable technology can be used on the face, neck, hands and other areas of the body and has many applications for anti aging and other beauty treatments, many of which are not offered by cosmetic surgery procedures and injectable fillers such as Botox®.

We have a large collection of lasers in each of our centers to suit each skin type and skin condition. Laser skin care treatment offers dramatic anti aging benefits including skin rejuvenating color correction, skin tightening and wrinkle reduction. Laser treatments and Intense Pulse Light (IPL) correct uneven skin tone and eliminate such imperfections as brown spots, sun spots, age spots, red blotches, multiple freckles and rough texture. Other improvements include clearing of problem acne and reducing the flushing red, ruddy complexion of Rosacea.

Laser skin treatments can reduce broken capillaries, spider veins of the face and other vascular based conditions. After a treatment regimen that may range from 5-7 treatments, sun damage and visible signs of aging are significantly reduced, restoring a youthful, clear and radiant complexion.

Aesthetic Beauty Tip #3:

There is no beauty without beautiful skin. Self treatment for anti aging and skin rejuvenation can limit your results and lead to more problems later on. This is why careful evaluation by a skilled aesthetic professional is highly recommended. With advanced equipment and examination techniques, a trained practitioner will determine the best course of treatment that is likely to produce the best results for achieving your goals. Sometimes skin care products alone are enough while other times your needs will be better met with a combination of laser treatment and a regimen of pharmaceutical grade skin care products.

Before you reach for that product on the shelf, consider finding a reputable skin care professional who can offer you the safest and most effective skin care technologies, techniques and products for reclaiming your most youthful and beautiful skin.

Chiropractic Care

Why Should You Choose A Chiropractor For Back Pain Relief?

When you are in pain, finding relief is the most pressing thought in your mind. Masking the pain with painkillers or dangerous surgery often leads to unfavorable results, and risks your future chances for living a pain-free life. That’s why finding a caring, professional chiropractor should be your first choice.
A qualified chiropractor can quickly provide you with a diagnosis and treatment plan, or can point you in the direction of a medical professional who can help you.
During your initial consultation, the professional chiropractor will gather your health history. After an initial exam he or she will be able to tell you what chiropractic services can do for you.
As an example, one patient began to have pain in his shoulder related to an old football injury for which he had previously had surgery. He decided to try a chiropractor before taking any radical measures. “My doctor wanted me to have additional surgery to correct the problem. Luckily, I went to a chiropractor first. My once a month visits eliminate my pain almost completely. I am even able to enjoy playing golf with no soreness.”
Why Your Family Doctor Can’t Relieve Your Back Pain
Family physicians are trained to know a little about a lot of things. Your body is an amazing biomechanical machine. Chiropractors specialize in relieving back pain by working with the mechanics of the human machine. Medical doctors are trained to work with the biology. They are adept at prescribing drugs that alter or react with human biology. Unfortunately, these chemical painkillers often come with a price: potential addiction, immune suppression, lethargy, and constipation, to name a few. Not only that, the body continues to be damaged by misalignment of the spine.
Doesn’t it make good common sense to seek out a back pain specialist when you have back pain? Wouldn’t you prefer to try a natural remedy before turning to drugs or putting your body through the trauma of surgery?
Don’t worry, your chiropractor will know if he or she can’t treat you and will refer you to an appropriate specialist.
The Benefits of Regular Chiropractic Care
Short-term and regular chiropractic care has a number of benefits including spinal and extremity pain relief. With monthly visits you can increase mobility, experience better range of motion, decrease stiffness in your back and eliminate muscular spasms. Another patient found no solution for her migraine headaches outside of her Chiropractor’s care.
Other popular uses for Chiropractor care are arthritic joint pain relief, increased joint health, increased performance and energy, increased sense of wellbeing and relaxation, increased balance and coordination, reduced degeneration and risk of injury, enhanced tissue healing and decreased tissue inflammation.

Chirpractors relieve back and neck pain

Back and neck pain
Chiropractors are best known for safely and effectively treating acute back and neck pain, as well as headaches. Whereas a medical doctor might prescribe pain medicine, muscle relaxers or anti-inflammatory drugs, and an orthopedic doctor might suggest surgery, a chiropractor will treat your back problems by hand, through manipulation of the spine.

Sturat Lakernick, a pediatric and prenatal chiropractor, sees more and more referrals from medical doctors: "They (patients) are tired of the drugs and want answers to what is causing their problems."

Chiropractors bring the musculoskeletal structure into proper alignment. Chiropractors change the position of your body and apply pressure to particular points along the spine that are not properly aligned. This results in a popping noise similar to the one created when you crack your knuckles. The noise is created by a change in pressure in your joints as gas bubbles are released.By adjusting the spine with their hands at particular pres
sure points, chiropractors unblock nerve energy and allow it to flow better down your spin and throughout your entire body.

Repeated visits can, over time, realign your spine to optimize overall health.

The brain sends messages down the spinal cord and out through the nerves to the rest of your body. If certain nerves are squeezed by a twist in the spine, they won't function as well as if they were straight. "Chiropractic [care] allows the nerves to work at their most optimum ability," he said, "allowing the body to heal at its optimum ability."

Benefits of Chiropractic Care

Benefits of Chiropractic Care
There are still many people who do not understand all the benefits that a chiropractic doctor can provide or how they can actually help you to improve your overall health. While even the traditional medical community are beginning to understand the benefits that doctors of chiropractic can provide to the medical field as a whole, many average citizens still look on chiropractors and chiropractic treatment with suspicion. There seems to be a lack of understanding on just how chiropractic treatment can be of benefit. For those who want to become informed about What chiropractic medicine can do for you here are the 5 most important benefits you can receive from a chiropractic care giver.
Increase Immune System Function. Perhaps the biggest benefit that chiropractic care has to offer is that it can improve your immune system. Since a healthy immune system is necessary to maintaining your overall health improving the function of this system is a huge benefit to your health. Studies have shown that people who use chiropractic care regularly have fewer colds and when they do the symptoms are less severe.
Helps to Manage Pain. Chiropractic care can also help you to manage your pain by helping to locate and correct serious nervous system stress, strengthen your muscles surrounding your nerves and advising you on the proper care of your body.
Can Increase Your Range Of Movement. By helping you to manage and control your pain and strengthen your muscles chiropractic treatment can often help to increase your range of movements following an accident or injury. Chiropractors will work with you to find exercises that will continue to aid you in recovering all or most of the range of movements you had before the injury or accident.
Avoid The Harmful Side Effects Of Many Drugs. Since chiropractic care is based on natural care they can help you avoid the use or overuse of pain medications and other drugs that often have serious side effects and can increase your health issues. The fewer drugs you take the less dangers await you down the road.
Get The Right Medical Attention You Need. Since chiropractic medicine deals with your overall health and well being a chiropractor often discovers health problems or conditions that are outside his realm of training. When this happens your chiropractor will refer you to a medical professional who can help you deal with these needs, helping to ensure your continued good health.
A chiropractic doctor is just one of the options available for those of you who are concerned about your health.

Eliminate Shoulder Pain at Work

Eliminate Shoulder Pain at Work
Neck and shoulder pain are common complaints of people working with a computer all day.  If you’re having these issues, here are 3 easy tips to help ease those tired aching muscles in your shoulders and neck.

Tips # 1

Check your shoulder position.  Raised shoulders are commonplace, especially if you’re propping your forearms on a desk that is too high.  Sitting for hours with neck and shoulder muscles raised in one position contributes heavily to aches and pains. Keep shoulders relaxed as you work.

Tip # 2

Check for clutter under your desk.  Clutter under the desk can cause you to sit too far away from your work surface. This results in extended reaching to access work items.  Prolonged reaching places stress on muscles and tendons, causing aches and pains.
Tip # 3

Check the armrests of your chair.   If your chair has armrests check the positioning to make sure they allow you to sit in a neutral position.  Armrests that are too high or too low places strain on the neck and shoulders.
Applying these three tips will eliminate any stressful positions as you work.  You’ll find your neck and shoulder pain improving.

If you want a good neck focus on your posture

Problems with poor posture are one of the most common causes of neck pain, which makes most neck pain easily stoppable by simply improving bad habits. Bad posture habits often begin at early ages in life, which makes the gradual ending result of neck pain a serious problem. Many simple activities performed with poor posture are mostly innocent, but the consequences are of significant concern.
When staying in the same place for extended periods of time, practice good posture. This means keep your neck in a neutral position at all times. If this is not possible, always make sure not to situate your neck in an awkward position. Common activities that may instigate problems with neck posture include reading in bed, sleeping, using a computer, and lifting heavy items. These activities, though normal in nature, often require using awkward positions to be most comfortable and effective.
When experiencing neck pain connected with bad posture, patients will feel stiffness in the neck and shoulders. At times, patients can also expect to experience headaches as a result of the bodily trauma that neck pain causes. Patients can expect these symptoms:
  • Consistent pain
  • Headaches
  • Tingling, burning, numbness
  • Stiffness in neck and shoulder
If you are experiencing posture-related neck pain, it is important that you consult a doctor for help. If your posture-related neck pain symptoms are severe, you will be referred to a physical therapist for additional assistance. If you don't receive proper aid, your neck pain may continue to increase, only causing additional injury.

Just make sure to clean these sponges thoroughly and let them air-dry between uses.

Great Yoga Exercises for Posture Improvement
  • A 3-part series of exercises to improve posture and take years off your appearance
  • Gentle yoga stretches open and release chronic tightness, opening heart, shoulders, and chest
  • Core strengthening yoga exercises improve posture by building strong posture support muscles
One of the fastest way to improve your appearance is to improve your posture. Poor posture detracts from our looks in numerous ways and makes you look older, no matter what your age. Worse, as we get older, the bad posture of our younger years for many begins to turn into the hunched back and shoulders, which are the precursors of dowager hump, or in medical terms, hyperkyphosis.
Poor posture is one of the most overlooked health issues in today's society. Bad posture lies at the root of much shoulder, neck, and back pain, and it can even be involed in recurring migraines and headaches. The rounded shoulders and forward head posture, which is so common in our computer-age, also compresses the chest cavity and heart area, restricting the breath and lowering your vitality and well-being.
Worse, if poor posture is allowed to progress into the full-fledged hyperkyphotic posture of a dowager's hump, it causes numerous health issues. Studies of elderly in nursing homes with the seriously hunched back of dowager's hump have found that people with advanced hyperkyphosis tend to suffer more health problems and die earlier than their peers.

Fortunately, there is a lot you can do to improve your posture. Studies have shown that yoga in particular can help strengthen the core posture support muscles and stretch and release tight muscles, which otherwise keep you trapped in a bad posture. Even better, as your posture improves, so does the structural health, balance, and vitality of your body.
Of course, the earlier you begin, the better. This 3-part series of exercises from the Yoga for a Healthy Back series is designed to improve or even reverse the early stages of dowager's hump.
With this sequence, you'll get three 20-min. download yoga practices with different types of corrective posture exercises, which help you improve your posture in a holistic and complete way. The downloads will be delivered weekly, one every Saturday for three weeks. The following corrective posture exercises build on each other to improve posture and strengthen the back. The download practices include:
Week 1. Heart Opening
This heart and chest-opening sequence improves posture and gradually  reshapes the body to help gently correct bad posture, including the hunched back and shoulders of early-stage dowager's hump.
Week 2. Core Integration
This core integration sequence lays the foundation for better posture by building core strength and restoring correct postural alignment. Without a strong foundation of core muscles posture support, permanent improvement of bad posture is less likely to occur.
Week 3. Back Strengthening for Posture Support
This back strengthening sequence strengthens the main posture support muscles of the back, necessary to counteract and reverse bad posture.
For Best Results. Practice each sequence three times in the first week after receiving the sequence. After that, for best results simply alternate the three practices, so that each is practiced at least once a week.
As always, you are adviced to consult with a physician before starting this or any exercise program.

Are you feeling tired???

Know Someone With Forward Head Posture?

Forward head posture
No wonder you’re always tired. You have a forward head posture!
Neck pain, fatigue, carpel tunnel syndrome, TMJ syndrome, fibromyalgia, headaches ~ can how you hold your head be the cause of all these conditions? If you, or someone you know, suffers from forward head posture, and an estimated 90% of the population do, then the answer is definitely yes!
With correct head posture, the ear is centered over the shoulder. If the ear is off center to the front of the shoulder, this is known as forward head posture. For every inch the head is forward of this center position, it exerts an additional 10 pounds on the muscles in your neck and upper back, causing them to work harder to keep your head erect and your chin up!
But how do you get into the habit of a forward head posture? Today’s use of computers, television and video games may contribute to this condition which ultimately compresses discs and causes extensive damage.

Here are several ways to help correct this condition:
  • Receive regular chiropractic adjustments
  • Make sure your child’s backpack doesn’t exceed 15% of his/her body weight
  • Take regular breaks from sitting at the computer
It may be hard to believe, but how you hold your head may be an important key to your health!

Health Hair Foods

Whole foods rich in protein, omega-3 fatty acids, zinc and biotin help promote a healthy scalp and hair. Add these foods to your grocery cart – think of it as a healthy hair recipe!
  1. Dark leafy greens. Kale, Swiss chard, spinach and other dark leafy greens are good sources of vitamins A and C, which the body needs to produce the oily substance sebum, a natural conditioner for your hair produced by your body.
  2. Salmon. Omega-3 fatty acids, of which salmon is an excellent source, are important to a healthy scalp. Salmon (choose wild Alaskan salmon) is also a good source of protein. If you prefer not to eat fish, try two tablespoons of freshly ground flaxseed or a high-quality fish oil supplement instead.
  3. Beans and legumes. They are a good source of protein which helps promote hair growth, as well as iron, biotin and zinc. (Biotin deficiencies can occasionally result in brittle hair.)
  4. Nuts. Specific varieties of nuts contain vitamins and minerals that can help promote the health of your scalp. These include Brazil nuts - a good source of selenium (limit yourself to no more than two nuts per day) - and walnuts, which provide the omega-3 fatty acid alpha-linolenic acid that may help condition your hair, as well as zinc, which can minimize hair shredding. Cashews, almonds and pecans are other hair-healthy choices.
  5. Eggs. A good source of protein, which helps prevent dry, weak and brittle hair. Choose organic, omega-3 fortified eggs from cage-free hens.

Have a Healthy Weekend

. Squeeze in a longer workout. The best part of the weekend is that you have more free time. So while you might not be able to squeeze in a 30-minute run over lunch during the week, you can use the weekend to go for a longer run at a beautiful park nearby. Or go to the gym to try a new hour-long class. Use the weekend as a time to refresh your workout and get more activity in without feeling rushed.

2. Eat like it's a weekday. When you think about it, it doesn't really make much sense to eat differently on the weekend than you do during the week—especially if your food choices during the week keep you fueled and energized. It can be easy to skip meals on the weekend and then make up for it later by overindulging at dinner. So, make a point to eat breakfast, lunch and dinner while sitting down. for when you're on the go, and follow a schedule just like you would during the week. Your body will thank you!

3. Stick to your usual sleep schedule. Are you someone who has a firm bedtime during the week only to stay up late and sleep in on the weekends? Changing your sleep patterns could throw off your schedule (hard to eat breakfast when you get up at noon!), and could also . Just think of all those times you stayed up later than usual, got hungry and ended up eating something unhealthy! Changing your sleep schedule can also make it harder to fall asleep on Sunday night which could set you up for a tired Monday.

4. Get outdoors. Because most of us work indoors during the daylight hours, the weekend provides a nice opportunity to get outside, see the sun and connect with nature. Heading outside can boost your body's production of , plus studies show that people are happier when they spend time out in nature. So, get out there and enjoy the great outdoors!

5. Fuel yourself for weekday success. Ask yourself honestly if you with workouts or restricted your food or calories too much during the week. If so, come Friday, your body may be hungry and tired, which can lead to overeating and underexercising on the weekend. Remember to every day, eating and exercising in a way that you can sustain for the long haul—not just a few days or weeks.

Guzzle Water Everyday

When you think of the amount of pollution, weather damage and abuse we subject our skin to, it's no wonder it begins to look a little dull long before it should. While our surroundings are often something we can't control, how we treat our skin is in our power. We have to be extra diligent in providing it nourishment to get that healthy glow, but it is possible! Now that I am in my late 20's, I never expected to see fine lines and wrinkles pop up on my face - but with the stress of school, finances, partying and living life, it's no wonder many of us begin to age before we even hit 30! Here are a few great tips that makeup artists and dermatologists have provided so we can take back that youthful glow:
Guzzle water everyday - Though you can't hydrate dry skin from the inside out, drinking water every day cleanses toxins that build up in the body and start showing on the skin. Flush your system with at least 64 ounces of water each day - I really notice a difference in how smooth and supple my skin is after I've been hydrating a few days.

Eat Healthy Fats

Fat is the most feared nutrient in the American diet. Thirty years ago, most health and nutrition experts encouraged us to eat as little as possible—certainly no more than 30% of calories from fat. This was the mantra, and it informed Cooking Light’s approach to a healthy diet, as well. Now we know that total fat is no longer really the issue. Some fats are more healthy, some less. And while it’s important to keep an eye on your daily intake—fats are packed with calories—a naturally balanced diet should embrace the good-for-you fats.
What you need to know: Our bodies need fat to function properly—fat is an essential nutrient. But saturated fats—those found in foods such as butter and other high-fat dairy products, meat, and coconut milk—tend, when eaten too often, to raise LDL (“bad”) cholesterol levels and promote plaque buildup in your arteries. This is also true of the trans fats, which are often the product of the process that turns liquid fats solid for use in processed foods. Saturated fat intake should be kept to a reasonable level; trans fats should be avoided.
By contrast, healthy monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats help our bodies absorb vitamins and minerals from foods, lower LDL and total cholesterol, and keep us feeling full and satisfied. Replace unhealthy fats with good ones, which you’ll find in vegetable oils, fish, nuts and nut butters, seeds, and avocados.

The Sheer Power OF Burdock Root

The famed Dr. Edward E. Shook, N.D., D.C. in the work Advanced Treatise In Herbology wrote, "nature has not produced for us many herbs whose food and medicinal value equal this one. It's ancient history as a reliable remedy for bad blood, ulcers, tumors, and many skin diseases such as what we today call eczema, psoriasis, acne, lupus, etc., to say nothing of internal disorders such as syphilis, leprosy, cancer, etc., and the modern proofs of its marvelous efficacy in the treatment of humanities most fearsome and loathsome diseases is positive proof that very few if any herbs are more virtuous or possess more curative powers."

It should be noted that Dr. Shook was a very successful natural healer. In fact, the famed and imminent herbalist and naturopath Dr. John Christopher, N.D., was a student of Dr. Shook. Dr. Shook went on to say, with regard to burdock root: "to our certain knowledge, it has cured syphilis after all other treatments had failed. For the successful treatment of chronic skin diseases, especially eczema, burdock has no equal, while for boils its quick alterative and curative effect is truly remarkable."

Burdock root has also been combined with high dosages of vitamin C to clear up stubborn staph infection. Additionally, it has been used effectively by natural practitioners in helping to normalize blood sugar levels in those with diabetes.

Lumbar Supports May Not Prevent Back Pain

Lumbar supports have often been used in the fight against back pain; now, researchers are taking another look at the effectiveness of the brace. Authors for the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews  (2008; [2]) searched “randomized controlled trials that reported on any type of lumbar supports as preventive or therapeutic intervention for nonspecific low-back pain.” Their review included seven studies on prevention (14, 437 subjects) and eight studies on treatment (1,361 subjects). Overall, the methodological quality of the studies was low.

The researchers found very little evidence to support the use of lumbar supports for prevention and treatment of low-back pain. In terms of back pain prevention or reduction of sick leave, “there was little or no difference between individuals with low-back pain who used back supports and those who received no treatment or [those who received] education on lifting techniques,” stated the authors.
But don’t suggest that clients throw away those supports just yet. The authors emphasized that further higher-quality trials are required to put this matter to rest.

Chiropractic Care for athletes

Chiropractic care is an important tool in the arsenal of any professional athlete. It has been shown to help reduce injuries, speed healing time and improve performance.
A number of professional American sports teams have a chiropractor on staff, including the NFL, NBA, MLB, PBA, Nascar and more. Professional golfers routinely use a chiropractor during tournaments, as golf can produce a great amount of stress on the vertebrae due to twisting. Well-known professional athletes such as Michael Jordan, Lance Armstrong, Tiger Woods, Joe Montana and many others have reported how they have benefited from chiropractic treatment.
A study conducted in 1991 by researchers Anthony Lauro and Brian Mouch, which was published in The Journal of Chiropractic Research and Clinical Investigation, found that athletes under chiropractic treatment were able to improve their performance an average of 10.6% over six weeks and 16.7% over a period of 12 weeks. The researchers noted that, as the study was only 12 weeks in duration, and athletic performance continued to improve during that time, it is possible that further enhancement may be possible with longer chiropractic treatment, though at what point improvement would level off is still unknown.
Another study reported in the Journal of Vertebral Subluxation Research in 1997, which evaluated the performance of baseball players, found a marked increase in athletic performance, including an increase in capillary counts, after 14 weeks in the group that was receiving upper cervical chiropractic adjustments. In regard to the effect of chiropractic care on these athletes, the researchers concluded that, “it is evident that changes were measurable in regard to physical strength, tests of athletic ability such as the long jump, and microcirculation.”
Athletes under chiropractic care have faster reaction time, better coordination and achieve more accurate and precise fine movements, all of which contribute to better performance.
There are a large number of high-impact sports that exert a lot of stress on the spine. It is quite easy for the vertebrae to become misaligned during a football tackle, during competitive wrestling or in a Nascar race that involves excessive g-force. When this happens, it can disrupt nerve transmissions from the nerves in the spinal cord, resulting in limited range of motion, slower reaction time, headaches, inflammation and slower recovery from injuries.
Chiropractic adjustments reduce irritation to the roots of the nerve in the spinal column, which allows for greater range of motion and joint flexibility. In addition, joint pain is alleviated and blood circulation is increased, which supplies the body’s muscles and organs with oxygen

Healthy Skin tips

1. Protect yourself from the sun

One of the most important ways to take care of your skin is to protect it from the sun. A lifetime of sun exposure can cause wrinkles, age spots and other skin problems — as well as increase the risk of skin cancer.
For the most complete sun protection:
  • Use sunscreen. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15. When you're outdoors, reapply sunscreen every two hours — or more often if you're swimming or perspiring.
  • Seek shade. Avoid the sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when the sun's rays are strongest.
  • Wear protective clothing. Cover your skin with tightly woven long-sleeved shirts, long pants and wide-brimmed hats. Also consider laundry additives, which give clothing an additional layer of ultraviolet protection for a certain number of washings, or special sun-protective clothing — which is specifically designed to block ultraviolet rays.

2. Don't smoke

Smoking makes your skin look older and contributes to wrinkles. Smoking narrows the tiny blood vessels in the outermost layers of skin, which decreases blood flow. This depletes the skin of oxygen and nutrients that are important to skin health. Smoking also damages collagen and elastin — the fibers that give your skin its strength and elasticity. In addition, the repetitive facial expressions you make when smoking — such as pursing your lips when inhaling and squinting your eyes to keep out smoke — can contribute to wrinkles.
If you smoke, the best way to protect your skin is to quit. Ask your doctor for tips or treatments to help you stop smoking

To keep the body in good health is a duty... otherwise we shall not be able to keep our mind strong and clear.

Three Foods that Age You:

1. Trans-fats.Trans-fats come mainly from partially hydrogenated oil--oil put through a chemical process that hardens it. While it was once thought that trans-fats were a healthier alternative to the saturated fat that comes from animals, trans-fats have been linked to higher LDL (bad) cholesterol and lower HDL (good) cholesterol. Check ingredient labels for partially hydrogenated oil (ignore the trans-fat entry on the Nutrition Facts label, as foods with up to .5 grams of trans-fat can be labeled as having 0% trans-fat). Greene also suggests skipping restaurant pies and fried foods, and using butter or shortening made without trans-fatty acids in recipes that call for shortening or margarine.

2. Saturated fat. This type of fat is found in animal products--meat and dairy. It promotes inflammation that can lead to heart disease, diabetes, obesity, and even cancer, and raises LDL (bad) cholesterol. Most experts recommend limiting saturated fat to no more than 10% of your daily calories. Greene suggests eating red meat no more than three times a month to avoid saturated fat, as well as choosing leaner cuts of beef and pork, poultry without skin, and no-fat or 1% fat milk and yogurt.

3. Sodium. In many people, sodium contributes to high blood pressure, as well as heart and kidney disease and cancer. Recent government guidelines severely restrict the amount of recommended sodium to 1,500mg/day, which Greene says is almost impossible to achieve if you eat out at all. His plan allows up to 2,300mg/day (the previous government limit). Cutting back on processed foods, eating fast food less and including more whole foods in your diet can make a big dent in your sodium consumption, as packaged goods and convenience foods uuuare the primary source of sodium in our diets. When you do buy packaged goods, read labels and opt for the lowest-sodium food in every category. Greene also suggests limiting meals eaten at home to no more than 400mg of sodium on days when you do eat out to maintain a balance

Simple Ways to Move Your Body
You can start the process of weight loss now by adding a little more activity to your life. If you're not ready for a structured program, start small. Every little bit counts and it all adds up to burning more calories.
  • Turn off the TV. Once a week, turn off the TV and do something a little more physical with your family. Play games, take a walk...almost anything will be more active than sitting on the couch.
  • Walk more. Look for small ways to walk more. When you get the mail, take a walk around the block, take the dog for an extra outing each day or walk on your treadmill for 5 minutes before getting ready for work.
  • Do some chores. Shoveling snow, working in the garden, raking leaves, sweeping the floor...these kinds of activities may not be 'vigorous' exercise, but they can keep you moving while getting your house in order.
  • Pace while you talk. When you're on the phone, pace around or even do some cleaning while gabbing. This is a great way to stay moving while doing something you enjoy.
  • Be aware. Make a list of all the physical activities you do on a typical day. If you find that the bulk of your time is spent sitting, make another list of all the ways you could move more--getting up each hour to stretch or walk, walk the stairs at work, etc.

Accupunture for Pain

Acupuncture is among the oldest healing practices in the world. As part of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), acupuncture aims to restore and maintain health through the stimulation of specific points on the body. In the United States, where practitioners incorporate healing traditions from China, Japan, Korea, and other countries, acupuncture is considered part of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM)

Physical pain is a common occurrence for many Americans; in fact, a national survey found that more than one-quarter of U.S. adults had recently experienced some sort of pain lasting more than a day. In addition to conventional treatments, such as over-the-counter and prescription medications, people may try acupuncture in an effort to relieve pain. This fact sheet provides basic information about pain and acupuncture, summarizes scientific research on acupuncture for specific kinds of pain, and suggests sources for additional information.

  • People use acupuncture for various types of pain. Back pain is the most commonly reported use, followed by joint pain, neck pain, and headache.
  • Acupuncture is being studied for its efficacy in alleviating many kinds of pain. There are promising findings in some conditions, such as chronic low-back pain and osteoarthritis of the knee; but, for most other conditions, additional research is needed. The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) sponsors a wide range of acupuncture research.
  • Acupuncture is generally considered safe when performed correctly.

Acupuncture, among the oldest healing practices in the world, is part of traditional Chinese medicine. Acupuncture practitioners stimulate specific points on the body—most often by inserting thin needles through the skin. In traditional Chinese medicine theory, this regulates the flow of qi (vital energy) along pathways known as meridians.
According to the 2007 National Health Interview Survey, which included a comprehensive survey of CAM use by Americans, 1.4 percent of respondents (an estimated 3.1 million Americans) said they had used acupuncture in the past year. A special analysis of acupuncture data from an earlier NHIS found that pain or musculoskeletal complaints accounted for 7 of the top 10 conditions for which people use acupuncture. Back pain was the most common, followed by joint pain, neck pain, severe headache/migraine, and recurring pain.

Want a healthy back? Thry this...

The purpose of performing exercises for spinal alignment is to strengthen the smaller, weaker muscles surrounding the spine, stretch tight muscles that pull on the spine, and create equal space between the vertebrae. Targeting these three areas should decrease back pain, strengthen movement patterns and increase range of motion for your spine.

Quadruped Balance

To strengthen the spine, the quadruped balance exercise is effective in targeting the small muscles that run alongside the entire spine on both sides. Start on your hands and knees, aligning your wrists under your shoulders and your knees under your hips. Pull your shoulder blades down toward your hips to keep space around your neck and ears, and engage your abdominals. Slowly lift your right arm and reach it out in front of you, keeping your upper arm aligned with your ear if possible. Next, lift your left leg and reach it out behind you, trying to bring it parallel to the floor and no higher. Focus on creating length from your right fingertips to your left toes, balancing through the hips, and holding your body still. Continue to breathe and hold this position for 7 to 10 seconds before releasing the arm and leg and repeating on the other side. Perform this exercise 10 to 12 times per side.

Spine Stretch

Stretching the spine on a regular basis is important to prevent tight muscles from pulling the vertebrae out of alignment. Begin by lying on your back, then bend your right knee and bring the knee over your hip. Stretch your right arm out to your side and use the right arm and shoulder as an anchor, making sure you keep them down on the floor during the stretch. Place your left hand gently on your right knee, and with an exhale, move your knee across your body toward the floor to your left. Do not force your knee to the floor, just move it as far as possible. Hold the stretch for a minimum of 30 seconds, concentrating on deep breathing as you hold. Release back to the center and switch sides. If you feel this is easy and you are not getting enough stretch, you can straighten your leg versus keeping it bent; this will provide more of a stretch to your back.

Spine Roll

The spine roll helps create space between the vertebrae to keep the spine mobile and pain-free. Start by lying on your back with your knees bent and feet on the floor hip-width apart. Place your arms at your sides approximately 4 to 6 inches from your hips and tuck your chin slightly. Inhale to prepare, then as you exhale gently press your lower back down into the floor. Continue exhaling as your peel your spine off the floor one vertebrae at a time starting with your tailbone and moving up the spine until your weight is resting between your shoulder blades. Pause here as you inhale again, then with your exhale slowly roll down your spine one vertebrae at a time starting from the upper back and finishing with the tailbone. It is important to engage your abdominals firmly on the exhale breath to help promote the spine movement. Perform this exercise 8 to 10 times, concentrating on any areas that feel stiff or tight. If performed daily, your tight spots should become more mobile and your spine's range of motion should increase.

Beauty Foods For Younger looking Skin

When I was in high school and college, I got a summer job as a lifeguard. All those hours in the sun gave me what I thought then was a beautiful, bronzy tan.
Today I realize the sun exposure just accelerated my skin's aging process. Truth be told, I did wear sunscreen, but not always as much as a dermatologist would recommend. )
Turns out, the vast majority of UV light that I was soaking up was UVA. UVA is a major contributor to premature skin aging (think: fine lines and wrinkles) because it penetrates deeper than UVB light and damages skin cells before there's any visible sunburn.
Even worse, collagen-the fibrous protein that keeps skin firm, youthful-looking and wrinkle-free-begins to decline starting in your twenties!
Now that I'm older and wiser-and not anxious to look the part-I'm wearing more sunscreen to protect my skin from the outside in. And because I'm a registered dietitian and nutrition editor, I've seen the science that shows eating more of these foods will protect my skin from the inside out.
Keep your skin looking younger-for the rest of your life-with these 4 foods:
Strawberries: Eating more vitamin C-rich foods, such as strawberries, may help to ward off wrinkles and age-related dryness, suggests research from 2007 in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Vitamin C's skin-smoothing effects may be due to its ability to mop up free radicals produced from ultraviolet rays and also its role in collagen synthesis. (Vitamin C is essential for collagen production.) You can find vitamin C in a multitude of cosmetics-of which some have been shown to be effective in protecting skin-but why not go straight to the source for a tasty boost of C: red bell peppers, papaya, broccoli and oranges are other excellent sources. (
Tomatoes: Tomatoes get their red hue from lycopene, a carotenoid that may help to keep your skin smooth. In a study published in 2008 in the European Journal of Pharmaceutics and Biopharmaceutics, researchers found that of the 20 individuals studied, those who had higher skin concentrations of lycopene had smoother skin. Boost your lycopene intake with fresh summer produce like watermelon and carrots too.
Tofu: Tofu and other soyfoods, such as edamame and soymilk, may help to preserve skin-firming collagen because they are rich in isoflavones. In a study published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition, mice fed isoflavones and exposed to ultraviolet radiation had fewer wrinkles and smoother skin than mice that were exposed to UV light but didn't get isoflavones. The researchers believe that isoflavones help prevent collagen breakdown. (
Tuna: Eating tuna-and other omega-3-rich fish, such as salmon, sardines and trout-may help keep your skin looking youthful thanks to the omega-3 fat EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid). EPA has been shown to preserve collagen.

Yoga postures for a strong back and neck

Have you ever experienced a nagging pain in your shoulder blade area that just won't go away? How about chronic neck tension while sitting at your desk? Do massages feel great but a few hours later the pain returns?
Upper back and neck tension are complaints that are becoming more prevalent in physical therapy offices. With the increasing use of computers, desk jobs and time sitting in traffic, it’s hard to avoid these aches and pains regardless of how active you are.
Here's why--most of our daily activities are done in front of us while seated. How many times a day do you spend driving, writing, typing or eating? Over time, gravity takes over and the shoulders begin to round forward, the chest becomes constricted, the head juts out, and the upper back becomes stretched out or rounded.
The result of this posture is tight pectorals, shortened neck and weak upper back muscles. Consequently, smaller muscles that were not originally designed to be 'postural muscles' have to kick in and work hard to keep our bodies upright. In addition, certain sports including cycling and running can exacerbate the problem. Pain in the upper back and neck is often just a sign that your muscles are tired of doing a job they weren't meant for. The solution is to fix the problem, not the symptoms.
In order to combat chronic tension in these areas, you first need to work on stretching the tight structures that prevent you from sitting or standing with ideal alignment. If you strengthen the upper back without stretching the front of the chest, you will just keep falling back into the same faulty posture. Once you open up the chest and stretch out the back of the neck, then it’ll be time to work on strengthening the upper back.
Yoga is a wonderful way to accomplish both stretching and strengthening in a gentle and effective way. Here are a few suggested poses that you can work on at home or at the office.

Postural Awareness and Breathing

Deep breathing is the first step to relieving neck tension. When we breathe in a shallow manner, the muscles of the neck (instead of the diaphragm) contract. To begin to breathe deeply using the diaphragm, sit upright at the edge of a chair with your feet planted firmly on the floor. Make sure the knees are lower than your hips. Place your hands on your belly and close your eyes. As you inhale, feel your belly rise into your hands and as you exhale, feel it fall. Notice any tension in the neck and relax your neck muscles as you direct the breath into the belly.
As you breathe, bring your awareness into the front of the chest and the collar bones. Broaden your collar bones so the front of the chest lifts up. Drop your shoulder blades away from the ears and lift the crown of the head towards the sky.
Continue to breathe this way for 10 deep breaths. Try to do this every hour by setting an alarm as a reminder

"The Clock" (Pec Stretch)

Stand along side a wall and place your right hand up on the wall to 12 o'clock. Slowly move your hand from 12 to 1, 2 and finally to the position at 3 o'clock. Take your left hand and place it on the right rib cage. Take a deep inhalation and as you exhale, pull the rib cage forward without moving the right arm. You should feel a stretch in front of the right shoulder or down the right arm. Hold for six deep breaths. To intensify the stretch, move closer to the wall. Repeat on the other side. If there is any tingling in the arm, move away from the wall until it resolves or discontinue the exercise.

Arms Overhead With Strap

Using a yoga strap or belt, take your arms overhead, shoulder-distance apart. Make sure the palms face away from each other. If you cannot straighten your elbows in this position, take the arms wider on the belt. Drop the chin into the chest in order to relax the neck muscles and pull the strap apart. Hold for six deep breaths and repeat two times.

Downward Dog at the Wall

Stand facing a wall with your hands at waist-height. Walk your feet back into a table top position with your feet directly underneath your hips. Lift the sitting bones towards the sky as you press the hands into the wall. Feel as if your heart is melting towards the floor. If you feel a great deal of stretching in the hamstrings, keep the knees slightly bent. Hold for six deep breaths, focusing on opening the chest and lengthening the spine.
As with all things, consistency is the key and the more regularly you practice these exercises, the better off you'll be. Ideally, you should get up every hour to stretch even for a minute or two. Remember--we are fighting a battle against gravity. With regular practice and the right guidance you can stand tall, proud and pain-free for life.
It is possible that your pain is coming from a different condition and therefore is important to consult with a doctor or physical therapist prior to beginning any exercise program.

to stop, breathe and notice your posture.

How to Prevent Sports Injuries

If you are an athlete, then you know that injuries are as natural to sports as winning or losing. 10 million sports injuries occur each year, even though exercising, thinking ahead and wearing the right protective gear can prevent many of them.

You don't need expensive gear to prevent injuries; just the basics and a bit of knowledge. Here are some of the most common forms of injuries in football, hockey, baseball, and tennis, and tips on how to prevent them.

football

Concussions

Concussions make up a large part of football injuries. Many athletes have had their careers shortened due to concussions, as in the case of Troy Aikman, who was waived from the Dallas Cowboys after suffering nine head traumas during his twelve years in the NFL. This type of injury can also be fatal.

Prevention:
Although it seems evident enough, keeping your head up is a good way of preventing the injury, and reporting even the mildest concussion to the team physician can prevent grave consequences. A deadly form of concussion called second impact syndrome can kill negligent athletes. It occurs when an athlete suffers a second concussion, while the effects of the previous one have not yet subsided.

An athlete could have a concussion when he loses consciousness after a hit, or experiences memory loss, dizziness, headaches, nausea, and loss of balance. If any of those symptoms are present, a physician should be notified.

Properly strapping a helmet will prevent needless head trauma and wearing a mouth-guard can reduce the risk of concussion.

Ankle Injuries

Ankle sprains and other ankle related injuries account for 10-15% of all football injuries. This is due to the amount of running and sprinting football players do. Some speculate synthetic grass fields might also be part of the problem.

Prevention:
Athletes whose ankle produces a cracking sound should see a prolotherapist, especially if they had an ankle injury in the past. A prolotherapist can determine if ligaments are weakened and thus prone to injury. He or she may also propose ways of strengthening the indisposed body part.

Treatment:
Some ankles click after an injury because they are not properly healed. Ironically, conventional therapy prevents ankle injuries from properly recovering. Resting, applying ice, compression, and elevation decrease blood supply to the injured area and prevent healing. Movement, analgesics and exercise are the best ways to heal ankle sprains.
